Wiper Blade Mounting Types

Types of wiper blades mounts (wipers)
Various types of wiper blades mounts are currently used to attach the wiper blades. This is usually due to the desire of manufacturers to have additional earnings on parts, although some mount options are much smaller than others, which improves the aerodynamic drag of the wipers and improves the appearance.
Prior to 1999, most automakers produced cars with standard wiper mounts – “hook-and-loop.” This type of mounting is still the most common today. In 1999, Ford equipped its Taurus with a new mount, and then virtually all automakers began equipping their cars with different “tricky” mounts. Until recently, Japanese manufacturers have refrained from such steps, although the first cases already have – for example Nissan Quashkai, Honda Civic and Mazda 3.
Manufacturers of frameless wiper blades went different ways:
Production of sets of wipers with specific fasteners for specific car models. So do BOSCH and Valeo.
The pluses of this approach is the compactness of fastening and the ability to take into account the curvature of the windshield of specific car models. The disadvantages include a very large range of windshield wipers, which complicates the selection and increases the cost of “wipers.
Production of wiper blades with universal adapters. This way went such companies as SWF (in the production of framed wipers) and Champion.
The pluses of this way of development can be called the great versatility of wipers and ease of selection to the car. Minuses – worse aerodynamics compared to the specialized mounts and the complexity of installation.
“Hook” or “J-hook” Mounting Type

This is the oldest and most universal mount. It is usually designated by the letter “U”. Hook sizes may vary, the most common are 9×3 and 9×4, although there are others (for example some Audi models have very small hooks). In all major manufacturers of mounting wipers or adapters are universal for all sizes of “hooks”.
Side pin Mounting Type

Also encountered names “Pin in Arm”. This mount is found on vehicles from 2005 model year: BMW 3, Volvo S40, VW Jetta and Passat, as well as some models of Mercedes-Benz and Peugeot.
